The new look of the ORNIS building
The building's unsatisfactory technical condition and insufficient capacity of exhibition, educational, and depository spaces persisted long after the total reconstruction of the Ornis building. After considering all the parameters that the reconstructed Ornis building should have, the Olomouc region, as the founder, proceeded with an ambitious plan to completely rebuild the facility. Not only was the Ornis building fully repaired, but it was also expanded with a new wing.
The main purpose of the new extension is to serve as a depository for the ornithological and oological collection, an exhibition and lecture room, visitor facilities, and technical facilities. Above the foyer, a terrace with a herb garden was created, which visitors can access via an outdoor spiral staircase. From there, they can enjoy a nice view of the Ornis bird garden. In the original reconstructed part of the building, the main change for visitors is the completely new permanent exhibition called "Birds of the Czech Republic." Other spaces are dedicated to an extensive scientific library and also serve as workspaces for Ornis employees.
The reconstruction of the building took three years, and the Ornithological Station is open to visitors again since December 2023.
